The last think you want is to see that after you have reached your target weight, the pounds are beginning to pile up again. Here are a few key elements that you can look at that will help you to remain motivated to achieve your long term weight loss goals. </p>
<p>1. Your health is one of your most valuable assets.  If your weight has caused you health problems, this is a strong motivation to lose the weight and keep it off.  Risks of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes rise when you are significantly overweight. </p>

<p>2. Avoid comparing yourself with others.   Don&#8217;t measure your progress against that of another.  You must remember you are the one setting your weight loss goals not someone else.   You are also the one who must stay motivated.</p>
<p>3. Lifestyle changes are necessary.  Keep in mind that losing weight and becoming more physically fit,  you will have to make behavioral changes. With positive reinforcement your weight loss will become a commitment that you will make to yourself. Once you make it a habit you will see yourself losing the weight and keeping it off.</p>
<p>4. Don&#8217;t procrastinate.  You need to start your weight loss program right away. Setting goals and meeting them is one of the best rewards that you will be able to do for yourself. </p>
<p>5.  Take time to be grateful for the things you have and the weight you have already lost. This will make you feel better about yourself which is important when you are trying to lose weight.</p>
<p>As you can see, you will need to change certain aspects of your life to achieve your long term weight loss goals. If you are willing to do this then you will be successful in your goals.  It sounds so simple, but putting it into practice while challenging will be immensely rewarding.  </p>

<p>Are you going to the gym regularly but finding your weight loss progress has stalled?  If so it is time to step back and take a second look at your routine to find out what may be wrong. You may be spending too much time lifting weights and not enough on fat burning cardio exercise. </p>
<p>Experts recommend 30 to 60 minutes of cardio exercise three to four times per week for cardiovascular fitness.  A great cardio workout can be very satisfying both physically and emotionally, and may give you more energy throughout the day.</p>
<p><span id="more-411"></span></p>
<p>One great cardio exercise that you can do without having to sign up for a gym membership is walking. Walking at least 30 to 45 minutes at least three times per week increases circulation, and aids in weight loss.  The great advantage is that it is a virtually injury-free exercise, requiring no equipment. </p>
<p>Try hill walking for even more intensity  Find some good hiking trails, lakeside or beachside hills or nature reserves and you will soon be hooked on fresh air.   If have a desk job in an office, consider spending your lunch hour walking; you need only bring your walking shoes with you.  You may even find some exciting historic districts or parks in the city to explore which will make your walk that much more rewarding.</p>
<p>Yoga is not always considered a cardio exercise but that is because they have not really attempted it.   Typically yoga classes take place in warm environments like steamy workout rooms, with at least 10 or 20  other participants. Even beginner and intermediate yoga positions will tire you out quickly and make you sweat. Advanced yoga practitioners regularly end their workouts soaked to the skin. </p>
<p>Cycling is another great cardio exercise and quite enjoyable for many. Once again, consistency is the key. You need to take the bike out at least three to four days per week. Since bike riding takes a little longer to work up a sweat than walking or running, you need to do it for longer periods of time, unless you are actually competing or doing heavy hills.</p>
<p>In the gym there are many cardio workouts available, including the old standbys like treadmill or stationary bike. But you can also get a great cardio exercise workout from a sitting row machine, which most health clubs have.</p>
<p>Swimming is another great cardio exercise and one of the most enjoyable. Swimming is very low impact and just about anybody at any age can get in a pool and get a great workout.</p>
<p>So if your weight loss efforts have stalled kick it up a notch with some regular cardio exercise workouts and see how much better you feel and measure your progress.  </p>

<p>If you are looking for a way to lose weight, the diet programs you see advertised daily may seem like an appealing solution, giving you structure and focus.  They certainly appear to yield fantastic results, judging from the many success stories they show you on TV and on their Web sites.</p>
<p>However, any diet plan, whether it is a brand name and a registered trademark or not will take a great deal of commitment.  You must focus on changing your lifestyle and this includes counting calories and choosing proper foods as well as incorporating some exercise to augment the caloric deficit.  </p>
<p>Well, this can be overwhelming.  So where to start?  Here&#8217;s something new.</p>
<p><span id="more-396"></span></p>
<p>There is a book, &#8220;No White at Night&#8221; by Dr. Bill Gavin, which reveals that some of the most well known name brand diet programs are sometimes only marginally useful due to the demands they make on your time and your patience that it is difficult to stick with them.   Dr. Gavin instead suggests dietary changes that should produce measurable results for many people.</p>
<p>The basic rules of the natural diet change are quite simple in concept.  The first rule is: &#8220;no white at night&#8221;.   This is a reference to refined carbohydrates including bread, pasta, rice as well as any kind of dessert with refined sugar.   So firstly you must eliminate the high calorie carbs at your night meal before bedtime.  This is actually quite an easy way to dump many of your daily calories; cut out the refined carbohydrates which do not contribute nutritionally and lead instead to an accumulation of excess weight.  Removing them from your last meal is a good way to make a positive change.</p>
<p>Some people feel that merely skipping meals would be a far better idea: it would be more drastic; and it would make things simpler too. This is actually a bad idea; the natural diet change is for people who are too tempted to raid the fridge from time to time when they are put on a regular name brand diet. With such people, starving and dinner deprivation would only fill them with an irresistible urge for an in-between-meals snack. The idea is to keep yourself regularly fed with three meals a day.  Meals or snacks between meals aren&#8217;t used the same way by the body as regular meals are.   They are considered &#8220;extra&#8221; by the body, and are turned into fat for storage. </p>
<p>Would you believe that according to  Dr. Gavin&#8217;s book, three out of four people to come to a weight-loss clinic are skipping breakfast?  That alone reveals that skipping meals is a poor weight management strategy.   When you do eat your three meals a day, make sure that you include a good deal of protein in it. Proteins are basically the very opposite of carbs. Carbs are quickly digested for a quick burst of energy; proteins take time to digest; they fill you up, and keep you filled up until everything is properly digested. That should take six hours.</p>
<p>The next rule of the natural diet change is to stick with moderation.  Cutting down the size of your meals is a great way to lose weight without getting your body all worked up over missing the meals it has come to expect.  You may find online tools such as those on Fitday.com will help you keep track of what you eat.   You can also do this manually by keeping a notebook, a diary, really of your daily food intake. This enables you to be accountable to yourself for what you eat and to examine whether or not you are really creating a caloric deficit needed to lose weight.  In the final analysis, losing weight with an actual diet change like this is easier than anything a name brand type plan could ever do for you.</p>

Those pounds you have gained have nothing to do with the person you are on the inside. It is important to feel good about yourself throughout the process, and not to feel negatively or regretful of your actions which have led you to this point.  Be assured that you can and will change.  </p>
<p>Which leads naturally to the second part of the process which is to discern just  how it is that you  became overweight in the first place. What you will likely find is that is it was a confluence of circumstances which may have included poor eating habits, inadequate exercise and even habitual lack of sleep which are all contributing factors to weight gain.</p>
<p>Now you can make your task easier if you remove tempting and unhealthy foods from your home and replace them with your new healthier food choices.   If it is daunting to do this all at once then commit to removing the unhealthy foods, from your diet and your house a few at a time, but set a goal, say a week or so at which time they will all be banished.</p>
<p>Keep perspective by remembering that you did not gain all the weight overnight, and you can&#8217;t take it off that quickly either.   That said, time moves quickly; imagine how much weight you will have lost in six months even if you only took off a pound or two a week.  Such gradual loss may help you to change your food and lifestyle habits and increase the likelihood of keeping it off.  Sure, dramatic weight loss of many pounds in a short amount of time is exciting, and if anything, diet products and exercise programs have created unrealistic expectations, as not everyone can lose so much so quickly.  </p>

<p>The veteran TV weatherman&#8217;s inspiring 100+ pound weight loss &#8212; via gastric bypass surgery, diet, exercise and lifestyle changes &#8212; was profiled. During the interview he said that his father&#8217;s words to him, weeks before his death became his impetus to lose the weight.  Noting that it is an ongoing struggle, he said:  “No matter how much weight you lose, there’s still that fat guy lurking,” he said.  He also got on the scale and weighed in during the segment; his current weight was  204 pounds. </p>

A pedometer is helpful to keep track of how much you are walking but baring that, make sure you walk at least 30 minutes three times a week, preferably five or six times a week. </p>
