What is a sensible diet? This is a common question. As a rule of thumb a low carb 1200 calorie diet plan may benefit you. However, be aware that some individuals may need more calories per day even while on a diet. Dropping below 1,200 calories is not considered wise as it may put the body in starvation mode and have a negative impact on health.

Portion sizes must be cut no matter what your daily intake will be on a diet. Sadly some fast food and restaurant meals total well beyond 1,200 calories. This leads to a distorted perception of what should constitute a reasonable daily intake of food whether dieting or maintaining a health weight.

So what to do? First of all, skipping empty calories — sugar and refined carbohydrates is a must. We also need to make sure we eat the right kinds of fat. Too many people who embark on a diet cut out all types of fats. This only makes you miserable as the first place you lose fat from is your brain cells. Your brain needs good fats such as omega 3 in order to distribute feel good chemicals i.e. serotonin throughout your body. Starving yourself of these good fats is self defeating.
