How to Get Started When You Need to Lose Weight

Many people need to lose weight and really don’t even know how to begin. Whether it is weight gained during a pregnancy or it is the accumulated pounds from years of a sedentary lifestyle, carrying excess weight can be overwhelming and discouraging to think about all you need lose and how far you have to go.

There are a few things that all of us should do when we are trying to start on a weight loss program that are easy to do, and they really put weight loss into perspective.

The first thing to remember is that being overweight does not make you a bad person or diminish your self worth in any way, shape or form. Those pounds you have gained have nothing to do with the person you are on the inside. It is important to feel good about yourself throughout the process, and not to feel negatively or regretful of your actions which have led you to this point. Be assured that you can and will change.

Which leads naturally to the second part of the process which is to discern just how it is that you became overweight in the first place. What you will likely find is that is it was a confluence of circumstances which may have included poor eating habits, inadequate exercise and even habitual lack of sleep which are all contributing factors to weight gain.

Now you can make your task easier if you remove tempting and unhealthy foods from your home and replace them with your new healthier food choices. If it is daunting to do this all at once then commit to removing the unhealthy foods, from your diet and your house a few at a time, but set a goal, say a week or so at which time they will all be banished.

Keep perspective by remembering that you did not gain all the weight overnight, and you can’t take it off that quickly either. That said, time moves quickly; imagine how much weight you will have lost in six months even if you only took off a pound or two a week. Such gradual loss may help you to change your food and lifestyle habits and increase the likelihood of keeping it off. Sure, dramatic weight loss of many pounds in a short amount of time is exciting, and if anything, diet products and exercise programs have created unrealistic expectations, as not everyone can lose so much so quickly.

Ultimately you want to lose the weight once and for all; you don’t want to yo-yo so let that be your abiding commitment to take it off for good when you are thinking about how to get started when you need to lose weight.
