<p>Remember, the total calories you consume over a 24-hour period or during  a week is what causes weight loss or weight gain; what time you eat them doesn&#8217;t matter.   </p>
<p>Eat when you&#8217;re hungry, not when the clock says it&#8217;s time to eat, but be sure to eat sensible portions.  A rule of thumb; it if will not fit in the palm of your hand it is too much food! </p>
<p>Dieting with a friend makes weight loss easier; you and your friend can help keep each other motivated.  </p>

<blockquote><p>People will lose weight for money, even a little money, suggests a study that offers another option for employers looking for ways to cut health care costs.</p>
<p>The research published in the September issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that cash incentives can be a success even when the payout is as little as $7 for dropping just a few pounds in three months.</p>
<p>Unlike providing onsite fitness centers or improving offerings in the company cafeteria, cash rewards provide a company with a guaranteed return, the researchers said.</p>
<p>&#8220;They really can&#8217;t be a bad investment because you don&#8217;t pay people unless they lose weight,&#8221; said Eric A. Finkelstein, the study&#8217;s lead author and a health economist at RTI International, a research institute based in nearby Research Triangle Park.</p>
<p>The study involved about 200 overweight employees at several colleges in North Carolina, divided into three groups. One group received no incentives while the other two groups received $7 or $14 for each percentage point of weight lost.</p>
<p>For example, someone in the middle group weighing 200 pounds who lost 10 pounds, or 5 percent, would get $35.</p></blockquote>
<p>But why wait for an enlightened employer to pay you?  What happens if you purposefully set aside money to reward yourself  if you lose X number of pounds?</p>
<p>Or purposefully set aside the money you save each time you make the conscious decision to not buy that unhealthy treat.  This may add up over time.</p>

<p>Given the <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/obesityinchildren.html">rising obesity rates, especially among children</a>, it is inspiring to see their participation in the Children&#8217;s Run event of the <a href="http://www.runphilly.com">30th Annual Philadelphia Distance Run</a>; children ran 1/4 to 1 mile, depending upon their age group.</p>

<p>More than 14,000 adults of all ages and fitness levels, were also <a href="http://www.philly.com/inquirer/front_page/20070917_For_many_Phila__runners__the_race_is_not_to_the_swift.html">participants of the Philadelphia Distance Run</a>, a half-marathon distance, 13.1 miles.</p>
<blockquote><p> Yesterday&#8217;s runners came from nearly every state and 14 countries. (Only about 2,000 participants live within the city&#8217;s zip codes.)</p>
<p>And this year, as usual, the winners were world-class athletes, mostly from Kenya. At 7:45 a.m., while the masses were still waiting in long lines for a pre-run potty break, the pros were off and then, instantly, gone.</p>
<p>One hour later, that cluster of gazelles approached the finish line, having maintained a pulse-battering pace that most mortals achieve only when being pursued by a swarm of bees, oncoming trains, or something equally fast and lethal.</p>
<p>At that point, most of the rest of the 14,000 were barely halfway through the course.</p>
<p>&#8220;On this figure eight, you see them running to the end when you&#8217;re only halfway,&#8221; said Mike Greenberg, an information technology director from Kendall Park, N.J.</p>
<p>Demoralizing?</p>
<p>On the contrary, Greenberg said. &#8220;It&#8217;s inspiring.&#8221;</p>
<p>He finished the race yesterday in a respectable 2 hours and 21 minutes. &#8220;I&#8217;m not fast,&#8221; he said. &#8220;My goal is to finish, to have fun, and to not get hurt.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
