<p>Buying a gym membership might be your first step towards attaining a fitness and weight loss goal.  But before you rush out and buy a gym or fitness club membership, be advised it is a commitment that you will want to honor, not least because it is costing you money! <p>The best way to not make any serious mistakes signing  up with a place is to first ask yourself what exactly it is that you look for in a  membership.  Determine if the reason you have to join a gym is important enough to you that you would want to invest a good deal of time and money in it every day. If you really want to join to help your health, to get out there and meet new people, you have the right idea in mind. If you can also tell yourself that you care about these goals deeply enough that you&#8217;ll stick with them, you probably should get up and go sign up.</p>
<p>Think of what it is that crosses your mind when you just don&#8217;t feel like going to the gym one day. You try to make excuses yourself about how far the gym is or how it&#8217;s just too cold to go. It&#8217;s just a fact of life &#8211; even with a car at one&#8217;s disposal and easy parking available, no one likes to travel any kind of distance if they can possibly help it. Try to find a gym that&#8217;s close to where you live. Even if the personality of the gym doesn&#8217;t really impress you as much as another one that&#8217;s much farther away, you are sure to use your gym membership a lot more if the gym is closer. Try to find one that you can walk to in five minutes, and you&#8217;ll find yourself skipping it fewer days.</p>

<p>If you do have a choice among more than one gym, all of them being reasonably close, you probably want to pick the one that fits your personality the best. Some large chain gyms like to pipe in  music all the time, and it may not be to your liking. Some of them may have hard-core workout enthusists who might  put you off with their grunting and groaning. You want to check out the different times at the gyms around you that things seemed to be exactly the way you like them. And of course, you want to make sure that the gym you have your eye on isn&#8217;t too crowded at the time you visit. Waiting in line at each machine will be frustrating and take up too much of your valuable time.</p>

<p>In the end, you probably want to try out the gym you really like with a one-day pass before you actually sign up. Curves first began in 1992, in Harlingen, Texas.   Curves for Women locations is in  42 countries, including Canada,  Mexico, South Africa, Japan and Australia, to name only a few. Curves estimates that they have more than 4 million members.</p>
<p>Gary Heavin is the founder of Curves.   After dropping out of a pre-med degree program he could no longer afford, he took over a struggling health club.  The rest, as we say, is history.  Within a few short years, Heavin owned 17 fitness centers. Through trial and error, Heavin determined that  the average person doesn’t prevail at typical fitness center.  Heavin began to develop fitness centers that had a relaxed environment that encouraged productive socializing among members and a variety of exercise options.</p>
<p>At Curves, members engage in 30-minute workout routines modeled after traditional circuit training, with a variety of equipment stations placed in a circle.  Members spend a set amount of time at one station before moving on to the next. Members change stations at the same time and move in the same direction,  and they are able to converse with fellow members on either side of them.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a simple formula and it has made the Curve for Women fitness centers enormously popular.</p>

The more variation there is in your workouts the more results you’ll see, as the body will, unfortunately, adapt to the stress of exercise and you will find yourself getting diminishing returns over time.</p>

<p>Perhaps you have a friend who is also interested in achieving fitness goals.  Consider working out together. Not only will exercise be more fun as a shared experience with your friend, but you can offer each other support and encouragement, especially on days when you just don&#8217;t feel like going.   It&#8217;s a gentle but powerful form of accountability to share these common goals and encourage each other.</p>
